It’s no secret that uterine fibroids cause pain, heavy periods, and bloating — but bladder issues? Yes, it’s true. Fibroids can cause bladder pressure and frequent urination. Read on to learn more.

Uterine fibroids are common noncancerous growths that develop in or on your uterus, and they can cause more than just heavy periods or pelvic pain.

In some cases, fibroids press against your bladder and cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms. If you’re running to the bathroom more than usual, fibroids might be to blame.

Take a moment as Dr. Nordine Gaugau explains how fibroids cause bladder problems and how the team at The Fibroid Center at Image Guided Surgery Center in Clinton, Maryland, can help you find relief.

How fibroids affect your bladder

It’s no secret that fibroids can cause numerous symptoms, and you might experience different fibroid symptoms from your friend or sister with fibroids. The location of a fibroid determines what kind of symptoms you have.

When fibroids develop on the front of your uterus — especially subserosal or intramural fibroids — they can press directly against your bladder.

Researchers found that anterior (front) fibroids were the most likely to contribute to overactive bladder symptoms, such as frequent urination and urgency. These fibroids press directly against your bladder, reducing its capacity and triggering that constant “gotta go” feeling.

Signs your urinary symptoms are related to fibroids

If you notice any of these symptoms, it may be time to consider whether fibroids are the cause:

●  Frequent urination (more than eight times daily)

●  Sudden urgency to urinate

●  Waking up multiple times a night to urinate (nocturia)

●  Feeling like your bladder doesn’t fully empty

●  Pelvic pressure or a sensation of fullness

●  Leaking

If you experience these symptoms along with heavy periods or pelvic pain, fibroids may be the underlying issue.

In more severe cases, fibroids can also block the urinary tract. That makes it harder to empty your bladder and can lead to more serious urinary complications. If you can’t urinate, go to the nearest emergency room. Urinary retention is considered a medical emergency.

Treatment options that target the root cause

At The Fibroid Center at Image Guided Surgery, we don’t merely treat symptoms. We want to get to the root cause. In the case of symptomatic fibroids that cause urinary symptoms, Dr. Gaugau uses advanced, minimally invasive techniques to treat fibroids without major surgery.

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a nonsurgical procedure that shrinks fibroids by cutting off their blood supply. As the fibroid shrinks, it takes pressure off your bladder, easing your urinary symptoms.

The best part? UFE is a uterus-sparing treatment, so you won’t have to part with your uterus.
